Intoxicated Wrong-Way Driver On I-395 Nearly Causes Head-On Crash, Flees From Police: Cops

A Connecticut woman is facing serious charges after allegedly driving while intoxicated and speeding the wrong way on Interstate 395, nearly hitting oncoming cars head-on, according to police said. Troopers had to crash into her SUV to bring the dangerous pursuit to an end, authorities said.

Cailin Sorder, 34, of Griswold, is charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, driving the wrong way on a limited-access highway, engaging police in a pursuit, interfering with an officer, and first-degree reckless endangerment, police said.

Troopers began receiving multiple 911 calls around 2:30 a.m. about a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes near Exit 11 on I-395 in Norwich. Witnesses told dispatchers the SUV was speeding and driving dangerously.

Dashcam footage shows how narrowly the wrong-way driver avoided a serious head-on crash.

Connecticut State Police

Troopers spotted the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan as it approached the Troop E barracks in Montville. When officers tried to pull it over, the driver veered into the police station parking lot in an apparent attempt to flee, officials said.

Troopers deliberately rammed the vehicle to stop it from returning to the highway. No one was injured.

Officers forcibly removed Sorder from the vehicle after she refused commands to exit. She showed signs of intoxication as she was taken into custody, police said.

Sorder was held on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court.
